Able PAK provides cost savings at construction sites.
Over 43% reduction in diesel fuel consumption and additional benefits with Able PAK Battery Power Systems can be realized at construction sites.
Able PAK 066-066 or Able PAK 100-100 in their Hybrid running modes can deliver cost savings and Scope 1 emission reductions in user cases scenarios such as construction site tower cranes.
The Results:
- $47,000 fuel saving per year
- More than 43% reduction in diesel fuel consumption per year
- Less than 3 year payback as a return on investment
- 58T CO2 emission savings per year
The Scenario:
Consider a construction site using a diesel generator (220kVA) to power a tower crane.
The power is required for the crane the whole working shift, with the demand load during lifting and lufting functions being significantly higher to the slew, travel, and standby modes.
Without an Able PAK, the generator has to be sized to cope with a high lifting motor demand when it is called upon, and without delay.
During the non-lifting functions, the generators providing the tower crane power can be severely underloaded with the potential for incurring engine damage.
The system has to be able to cope with days of only occasional lifts, as well as extremely busy days, such as having to do constant lifts in a 10 hour day shift when doing a concrete pour, for example.
Savings are realized by having a smaller generator (Able GEN LG75CS) running in a more fuel-efficient manner, coupled to an Able PAK battery power system, such as a PAK 100-100 in Hybrid Mode, which provides the peak load spike when needed such as during lifting functions.
Able PAK Hybrid Mode:
This mode is a suitable selection when the total load at any time is less than the selected Able PAK prime power (kW) plus that of the generator added together.
Consideration is also given to sizing the generator to match the average hourly power usage of the tower crane across the entire shift.
The Able PAK in Hybrid mode can sustain upto a 112kW of supplementing generator power input.
In this mode smaller generator provides a constant, fuel-efficient power supply, with the Able PAK using its Energy Management System (EMS) to adjust power to the tower crane, as required by its functional demand.
Able PAK 100-100’s are well suited to high start-up loads, in that one coupled with a 100kW diesel generator can achieve a short-term start-up load in excess of 300kW!
When the crane is in a low power usage or standby functional state, the smaller generator re-charges the Able PAK’s internal Battery Energy Storage System (BESS).
Benefits of the Able PAK Battery Power System:
- Cost savings
- Reduced diesel fuel wastage on oversized generators
- Reduced generator damage from underloading
- Extend generator lifespan.
- Reduced Scope 1 CO2 emissions
An even further reduction in diesel consumption can be realized if the tower crane maximum load is less than that of the Able PAK, and the PAK is used in a Microgrid mode … see the Inside Story Example 1 …
